• The party was for the Fotheringhursts' twenty-fifth. The garden had been set up for it properly: two long tables under a canvas awning, a bar constructed from trestles near the terrace, flowers from the cutting garden arranged in terracotta pots along the stone wall. The Fotheringhursts had four acres and had been working them for twenty years, and it showed. The herbaceous border was in full July excess: foxgloves going over, the first echinaceas, roses in their second flush against the wall. The lawn had been mown in stripes that were, by three in the afternoon, already beginning to soften in the heat.
• Anna arrived with Hugo at half past two. Hugo went immediately to find Robert Fotheringhurst, which was what Hugo always did at parties: found the person he'd come to see and settled into that conversation, emerging two hours later with his glass barely touched and the air of a man who'd accomplished something. Anna had known this about him for twenty-one years. It still struck her as useful.
